Tennessee Education Commissioner Penny Schwinn recently visited three of the district’s schools in Memphis – Georgian Hills Achievement Elementary School, Lester Prep Middle, and Cornerstone Prep Elementary – Lester.

The Commissioner’s time in Memphis began in the Binghampton community at 320 Carpenter Street which serves as the location for both Cornerstone Prep Elementary – Lester and Lester Prep Middle Schools.  These co-located schools are operated by Memphis-based charter management organization, Capstone Education Group where Drew Sippel serves as the organization’s executive director.

Lester Prep Principal Koai Matthews and Cornerstone Prep – Lester Principal Hannah Hudson led the tour of the entire school which included visits to classes and a review of some of the achievement high points reached by both schools in recent years.  This included sharing Lester Prep’s TVAAS 5 status for the last two academic years.

The Commissioner’s visit in Memphis continued in Frayser at Georgian Hills Achievement Elementary Schools, one of the four schools operated directly by the ASD.

Georgian Hills Achievement Elementary Principal Yolanda Dandridge escorted Commissioner Schwinn to several classrooms where both had the chance to observe instruction and interact with students at varying grade levels.  Principal Dandridge also shared the success Georgian Hills has experienced with it reaching Priority-exiting status.
